CH 1 NCERT CLASS XI SOCIOLOGY

Sociology class xi ncert notes

Sociological imagination

The view of sociological imagination was given by C.Wright Mills. He says that the problems that an individual face are not his personal problem instead they are the public issue of social structure.

So all the problems that an individual face are the problems of public issue?
No, to make it a public issue it should affect the larger part of the society. Untill the larger part of the society is not affected by the issues created by society it will not become a public issue.
Example-:
A student failing in an exam is his own personal problem but what if the large number of students fails in an exam? Will it become an public issue? Actually Yes it will now become an public issue because this impacts the society. How? So it creates unemployment, depression, Anxiety etc.

So as written in the ncert the trouble occurs within the character of an individual and his immediate relations. The above example clearly explains the concept hidden in this line.

Introducing Sociology

In ncert in the first 4 lines you will read the lines saying you already read about the sociological imagination and the concern of sociology to study society as an interconnected whole.

Here i will give you the answer of studying society as an interconnected whole by the  sociology
So the concern of sociology to study the society as an interconnected whole because the other social sciences like his, geo, eco, poli sci or civics only gives the snapshot view of the society. So sociology see that how these social sciences are releated to each other to run the society.

The further lines in that paragraph only tells you about the relationship of other social sciences with the choice of an individual.

So now lets define what is sociology?

Sociology is the systematic and scientific study of social relationships, human behaviour, human culture etc. it is known as sociology. It is the youngest of all social sciences.

So is Sociology a science or not
To know this you can read my post

Now moving to the next topic which u can read from my post

Ideas that led to the emergency of sociology

1.Industrial revolution in Europe. Economic Development
2.French Revolution    Questions were raised for equality, fraternity, Liberty
3.Enlightenment --- Led to the scientific development

So in the west the society was developing economically very faster than non-economic societies.
For example Indian colonization

Darwin's theory--- He said that organic evolution had a dominant influence on early sociological thought.

What is organic evolution?
A very slow process in which living organisms change, adapt and diversify over successive generations.

For example
In the ancient time there were only few lakhs of people living in the earth but now in 2026 there are 800 crore living in the earth.Organic Evolution does not mean the numbers but had concern about the creation of the society and important parts of the society.

After the darwin's organic theory you will come to the line saying the way of looking  at society as a system of parts.

So why we are diving society? We all know that Sociology studies the society? So why we can't study society without dividing it?

The simple answer is no because the division of society give us the clear view about the society and his divisions which are responsible for its working.
Like -- Social instution,Social organisation,Social Community
These are some of the parts of the society.

Brief explanation of the reasons of the emergence of sociology

Industrialization in Europe
During the industrialization, capitalist society emerged and the factories were set up and people migrated from rural areas to urban areas, this led to the high demand of the food. The employment also increased and the division of labour took place.
Due to the division of labour we can say the jobs of the local workers was being snatched from them. Due to the division of labour now the factories have different units for the production of one product.
For example the production of car which  comprises of different units for assembling a car.

One more example we can take from India that during the early times the manufacturing of the bangles took place in the houses only but now in the industrialisation phase the making of the bangles will now take place in the factories.

The French Revolution
During the French Revolution the public demanded for Liberty fraternity and equality among all the people these were the main concerns during the revolution due to which this became one of the factor for the emergence of sociology.

The enlightenment
This also became a concern for the rise of sociology because somewhere during the enlightenment the science developed in the people started thinking scientifically.

Have you ever thought why we study the emergence of sociology from Europe  only why not from the other countries?

This is because most of the concern of the sociology took place in the Europe which comprises of the events such as industrialization, the French Revolution, the enlightenment.

Now moving to the topic capitalism and its global but uneven transformation of societies

In this topic we will come to know that as the industrialization took place in the western countries faster than the non Western countries they had the good technological advancement also due to which they made the ships and all and they enclave around 24 million people from Africa and took them to America the prisoners were shackled means they were having the chains when  like the prisoner in the jail they were sold by the chieftains in the costs to the plantation owners for the growth of sugarcane Indigo tobacco etc. so during this journey only 11 million people reached America. The institution of slavery was declined around 1800 but for the India it was the starting of the slavery because the Britishers day to Indians from the ship to their countries for the plantation of cotton and sugar.

Moving to the next topic the growth of sociology in India

Completed the recent topics ending as the in growth of sociology in Europe took place by the three reasons we have already seen but the growth of sociology as be studied today in India was different from Europe in India the growth of sociology took place by colonialism or we can say the British rule so in India also industrialization and capitalist society emerged.

So how does this thing happened so we know that India was the producer and the manufacturer of the cotton clothes the Indian cotton clothes where very much furnished and was liked by the world all over it was transported to all over Europe and France and Aisa.

The Britishers when they saw that the Indian khadi clothes were having the high demand what they did is they set up the factories which were having the very cheap machines for producing the cotton clothes however the tariffs were imposed on the Indian clothes due to which the people who wants to buy Indian clothes has to pay a big amount in order to buy the Indian khadi clothes and due to which the people of the Europe and France they have to buy the clothes that were made in their countries by the cheap factories. So due to this the Indian industry face a very much big loss.

After these things after the Sociology the social anthropology also emerged India

No let's move to the next topic which is the connection of sociology with other Social sciences so in this topic you will come to know about what is the relationship of sociology with the other Social sciences.

History studies the past
Economics study production goods services consumers
Anthropology studies the culture
Political science studies about the political system
